I suppose I should start things off by introducing myself, so here it goes.
My name is Cody, I'm 21 years old and am a senior here at Bowling Green. Unfortunately I won't be a graduating senior but I'm trying to avoid talking about that. I transfered here to Bowling Green last year from community college. Before that I went to Kent State and even Toledo for all of 4 days. It's been a long and twisted road, but I'm glad that I've ended up at BG.
I'm studying sports management, which is one of the reasons I chose BG, and am specializing in Sports Enterprise. I've really enjoyed my time here in BG, and in the program thus far. After I graduate (whenever that may be) I hope to find a job working as an athletic director. I would prefer to work a the high school level but definitely wouldn't be opposed to the collegiate level.
I've played sports for my entire life. Ever since I was young I've played baseball. It was my first sport and I definitely consider it my favorite. I played a little football in high school but ultimately I decided to focus on baseball because I believed I had a chance at playing in college. Unfortunately things didn't work out and I've attributed some of the blame to the athletic department of my high school, which is the primary reason for my desired future career.
On a more painful note, I'm a diehard Cleveland fan. Browns, Indians, and Cavs. Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the heartache of the 95 and 97 Indians teams, and the memories still keep me awake some nights. I've also been exposed, through my dad and ESPN Classic, to every other fabled title attempt by Cleveland franchises in the last 50 years. The Fumble, The Drive, The Shot, all have a special place engraved in my mind.
I'm also a huge College Football fan. I'm extremely excited for Saturday to get here! I lied to my boss so I can have Saturdays off, so if any one visits Ponderosa in Fremont...you don't know me, alright?
I'm a huge Buckeye fan and will defend them to the death. I've had some trouble coping with the big game losses the last couple of years but thats why God made Jack Daniels, right? Just kidding. I love my Buckeyes and am never afraid to sport my OSU gear. I'm also really excited for Bowling Green to start their season. Having transfered so much in my collegiate career I haven't been able to enjoy a good college football season as a student. Unfortunately I won't be in the Doyt tomorrow for the home opener but I plan on attending my fair share of games this year.
As far as this class is concerned, I'm really looking forward to it. I've heard good things about the class and am excited to get into some good discussions. I hope that I can walk away from this class with a slightly different outlook out sports, at least a more educated one.
Can't think of much more to say at the moment, but stay tuned I'll try to keep this exciting.

Hi Cody,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your background in sports. I can certainly relate to what you said about the heartbreak of being a Cleveland fan in almost every sport. I lived in Los Angeles in the mid-80s and remember seeing an article in the L.A. Times that made a big deal about Cleveland being the "Mistake by the Lake," and referring to the Cavs as the "Cadavers." It has been tough to bear. Hopefully one of these days, things will turn around. At least the Cavs seem to hold promise in the near future (if Lebron does not leave:-(
I liked the quote you included by Ali. He is someone we will be discussing later in the semester. I too hope we get into some stimulating discussions.
Great start on your Blog!

ReplyDeleteHello Cody,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your first entry, especially the humor throughout. After all your transferring around to different colleges, it sounds like you have found your fit here at Bowling Green State University.
It's unfortunate that you feel your previous athletic department was to blame for not being able to play baseball at the college level. You mentioned being an AD was a possible career interest for you. Hopefully you can do a better job than how you feel you were treated. My dad was an Athletic Director for 13 years. Being the AD of a high school is such an important job to the running of the athletic department. It became a 24 hour job for my dad, which took a lot of time away from our family. Sometimes he even had to miss I and my brother's sporting events if another event was at the same time. I don't mean to portrait the job in a bad light, I just have seen how much time it actually takes to run the department. On a more positive note, being the AD has its perks. All kinds of free shirts, shoes, jackets, etc... from all the distributors trying to get you to buy from their company. Also, free passes for a lot of the state level sporting events. There are so many more things like that, but those are just the few I remember right now. If you have any questions that I could help you out with from my point of view, let me know! Good Luck!
Keep posting that humor in your entries!;)

*sorry about the first two posts, they didn't show up right, so I deleted them...*
I think it's good that Kara provided insight about the job of an Athletic Director. Was that at the High School level? A lot of jobs in sports can become all-consuming, so it is good to know that going in to the position. Good comments, Kara.
ReplyDeleteHey Cody
ReplyDeleteI agree that baseball is a great sport event though I play basketball but still a fan of baseball. The thing i disagree with is being a Cavs fan. See the thing is that i am from Detroit and I am a huge Pistons fan and the fact you guys beat us in the playoffs was a fluke. I think the playoffs was rigid for Lebron because he is quote on quote the face of the NBA even though it should be Kobe Bryant hands down. The fact I cant deny is that Lebron is one of the best players in the league but not the best.
To switch subjects I can say that some high school programs do hinder people careers because of the lack of exposure. Yea it is unfortunate that you were a victim but when one door is closed another one opens.
Dr. Spencer- To address the question here and on the comment sheet from our blog turn in... Yes, my dad was a High School Athletic Director, but he was also in charge of all the middle school events as well. He really could have used an assistant, but coming from our smaller district school that was out of the question. A lot of the times with coaches they were in contract deals, so if no other issues were brought up during the duration of their contract and they still had a losing season, their coaching rights were finished at that point. However, there were always issues and scandals he would have to deal with. Sometimes it was inappropriate behavior or comments from the coaches, but for the most part it was trying to keep everyone within the regulations of summer session 'practice'. I know on several occasions our girls basketball coach was questioned about the time spent in the off season. He had to be very careful about how he went about the handling situations because my brother and I were in the sports that were sometimes being questioned... He had to make sure that he was not favoring and/or turning a blind eye to something that was going. I think he was an amazing AD and he has been honored this year for outstanding work and is being inducted in the Hall of Fame. It just goes to show that good, honest, ethical work pays off!
